The Short Answer
AI makes finance faster. It does not make finance accountable. When a number goes to your board, an investor or a bank, someone has to stand behind it, and that someone has to know why the number is what it is.
What AI Does Well vs. What Needs Judgement
| Task | AI tool | Human CFO |
|---|---|---|
| Categorising transactions | Strong | Reviews exceptions |
| Drafting a monthly report | Strong | Decides what the board needs to hear |
| Building a forecast | Extrapolates history | Challenges assumptions with context |
| Revenue recognition calls | Applies rules it is given | Interprets contracts and edge cases |
| Fundraise timing | Shows runway | Weighs market, investors and plan |
| Telling you what to cut | Lists the biggest costs | Knows which costs protect growth |
Where Judgement Shows Up
- A large customer pays annually upfront. Is that cash, revenue, or a liability?
- Burn rose last quarter. Is it a hiring plan working, or a problem?
- A board member asks why the forecast moved. The answer needs history and context.
- An investor in due diligence asks for ARR reconciled to the ledger.
Each of these has a technically correct answer that is still the wrong one for your company. See how to check AI-generated financials for a practical review list.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is an AI CFO?
An AI CFO is a software product that uses AI to categorise transactions, generate reports, answer finance questions in chat and produce simple forecasts. It does not take legal or fiduciary responsibility for the numbers.
Can AI replace a CFO?
AI can replace parts of the work a CFO's team does, such as data entry, report drafting and variance summaries. It cannot replace the accountable judgement a CFO provides on fundraising, board communication, pricing and risk.
How do I know if AI-generated financials are accurate?
Check that the balance sheet reconciles to bank and card statements, revenue is recognised when earned rather than when paid, accruals and deferrals are recorded, and someone qualified has reviewed the close. AI tools rarely do all four unprompted.
Should an early-stage startup use an AI CFO tool?
It can, for automation and visibility. Pair it with a human finance partner once you have investors, a board, or decisions where a wrong number is expensive.
